Adley Stump, a 2011 strategic communications graduate, became famous overnight in 2012 after appearing on NBC’s The Voice, which she did on a dare. That launched her country music career, where she won a Grammy Amplifier award and opened for acts such as Blake Shelton, Chris Young, Jake Owen and Tim McGraw. She had another lifechanging moment in 2016, when she became a social media star due to her "Chickens in the Bathtub!" video becoming a viral hit. To date, her videos have totaled over 500 million views across Facebook and Instagram. The Adley Show on Facebook Watch averages over 3 million viewers every week. She joined us to talk about her life experiences and share advice on finding your own path to success.

Ardoth Hassler made contributions to information technology and higher education that have had far-reaching impacts, leading to her induction into the CAS Hall of Fame in September. She credits Oklahoma State University with providing her the tools to succeed. 

“My OSU education fostered a 45-year career in IT and higher education,” said Hassler, a 1972 mathematics graduate. “The technical foundation that I had in mathematics and computer science at OSU launched me on that path.” 

Thirteen College of Arts and Sciences students have been selected by the OSU Alumni Association as Oklahoma State University Seniors of Significance for the 2019-2020 academic year. CAS leads all OSU colleges with 13 students among the 41 honorees.

The Seniors of Significance Award recognizes students who have excelled in scholarship, leadership and service to campus and community and have brought distinction to OSU.

The ancient Greek myth of Jason and the Argonauts is still famous thousands of years after its creation because of its timeless themes. The OSU Department of Theatre is putting those on display with a presentation of Argonautika: The Voyage of Jason and the Argonauts from Thursday through Sunday.

Director David Kersnar, new head of the department, is a founding member of Chicago’s Lookingglass Theatre Company, which staged the first production of Argonautika in 2006.

Coming from a rural town in West Virginia and a family of miners and railroaders, William “Bus” Jaco never thought he would make it to college, much less have a doctorate degree, a theorem named in his honor and be inducted into the Oklahoma Higher Education Heritage Society Hall of Fame. 

Jaco receive the latter recognition Nov. 4.

During the recent opioid trial in Oklahoma, CNN turned to the Department of History’s Holly Karibo for expert analysis. Her research focuses on the history of vice, labor and sexuality in border cities, as well as examining the North American borderlands. She joined us to talk about the history of drug use and policy in America, as well as immigration policy and practice. Her expertise is the past, but her insight is incredibly relevant to present debates.

Sydney McDaniel of Broken Bow, Oklahoma, thought she wanted to be a writer when she grew up. Yet during high school, she was introduced to the world of speech pathology, which brought back an old memory.

“I had a weird flashback,” she said. “In first grade, I read a book about a little girl who went to a speech pathologist because she was having issues with articulation and stuttering. At the end, she was able to say ‘bell.’ Her speech was improving! So, that memory kind of put the job into some type of perspective for me with my future.”

The College of Arts and Sciences is proud to announce the CAS students chosen among Oklahoma State University’s Top 10 Freshmen. 

The OSU Mortar Board Honor Society selects honorees based on scholarship, outstanding leadership and community service. Students are eligible to apply their sophomore year based on freshman year achievements.

Glen Krutz wasn’t looking for a job when he heard about OSU’s search for a new dean for the College of Arts and Sciences, but this was too good of an opportunity to pass up. 

“It is rare for large college dean positions to come open at major universities,” said Krutz, then the University of Oklahoma’s senior vice provost. “I talked to some people whose opinions I respect, and they thought it would be a good fit. When I came to Stillwater, I really liked the vibe. I liked the hard questions the hiring committee asked and what they said about OSU. It was a delightful exchange during an interview that would normally be stressful, not fun.”
