The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) awarded Oklahoma State University a $1.5 million grant to implement a multi-disciplinary track for undergraduate research in the life sciences. The grant originated from the 2014 HHMI Competition, the institute’s challenge to research universities to develop effective strategies that will lead to significant and sustained improvement in the persistence in science by all students, including those students who belong to groups underrepresented in science. 

Oklahoma State University assistant professor of poetry Rose McLarney published her second collection of poems, titled It’s Day Being Gone, this week on Penguin.  The collection was selected as a winner of the National Poetry Series. 

Eleven fellowships were awarded this year to Oklahoma State University doctoral students. The Robberson Summer Dissertation Fellowships support doctoral students by providing a $6,000 stipend and a tuition waiver for up to three credit hours.

With all the excitement surrounding a commencement ceremony, most Oklahoma State University graduates might take for granted the customary walk across the stage.

For zoology graduate Mary Beth Davis, the walk on May 10, 2014, was at the forefront of her mind. Davis is paralyzed from the waist down as a result of an auto accident, but with the help of an Ekso bionic suit, she was able to walk across the stage to receive her diploma.

The Phi Beta Kappa chapter of Oklahoma State University, Gamma of Oklahoma, initiated 18 new students members and its first ever alumni member on May 9, 2014. It was the second annual induction ceremony, as OSU’s chapter was established in 2013. 

Two graduating seniors from Oklahoma State University earned Student Awards of Excellence from the Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition (OVAC). Randall Barnes and Megan Hughes each collected $500 rewards from the OVAC for their work. 

Two Oklahoma State University graphic design students won awards at the 10^th annual National Student Show and Conference held May 1-3, in Dallas, Texas. The Dallas Society of Visual Communications hosts the conference every year.

Forty of Oklahoma State University’s top students were recognized as Wentz Scholars at the annual symposium held Friday, April 25, in the Edmon Low Library browsing room. Seventeen of the 40 Wentz Research Scholars represented disciplines in the College of Artsand Sciences.

Megan Reidy graduated from Oklahoma State University on Saturday with honors degrees in physiology and zoology, a degree in biochemistry, and a certificate in environmental studies. She led the student processional for the College of Artsand Sciences commencement ceremony as its 2014 Outstanding Student Representative.
