About

Microbiology and Molecular Genetics offers courses that are designed to provide you with comprehensive training in microbiology and molecular biology. Here you work with organisms that span the spectrum of microbial life. The Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics is ecstatic to work with the various scholar programs on the OSU campus because of the combined ability to provide you with support for college preparation, connect you to various resources, and nurturing your individual academic development. In the end, our goal is to have you become as effective and successful as you can be during your time here at OSU.  In addition to the B.S. degree, the department offers graduate programs leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees.

 Courses to expect for this major include Food Microbiology, Microbial Physiology & Ecology, Pathogenic Microbiology, and Concepts in Medical Genetics.

 

Career Options

Students interested in careers in microbiology should have broad interests in the biological sciences and an aptitude for biology and chemistry. For some areas of specialization, an aptitude for mathematics and physics is also essential. Our graduates have pursued successful careers in a variety of fields:

Minor

The minor in Microbiology is for you if you wish to seek a better understanding of microbiology. This program expands your knowledge in the science of microbiology through classroom and lab courses.

Become an OK-LSAMP Scholar! OK-LSAMP is a consortium of Oklahoma colleges and universities working together to develop programs aimed at increasing the number of students from under-represented populations who receive degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The OK-LSAMP scholarship program provides scholars with increased opportunities and connections, including undergraduate research experiences, graduate school preparation, international experiences, and internships/externships with companies in the STEM fields. 

Accelerated Master's Degree

The Accelerated Master’s Degree offers students the opportunity to obtain a Master’s of Science in Microbiology and Molecular Genetics in a one-year time frame. The overall goal of the program is to provide an environment of scholarship, integrity, research and teaching excellence that will assist students in acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to excel as professional scientists and educators.
