About

The OSU Philosophy Department offers you an education emphasizing the critical evaluation of foundational ideas, the history of ideas, and familiarity with controversies and critical analysis applied to real-world issues. In philosophy classes, you will read the words of some of the greatest minds who have ever lived, and try to work out their own views about these vital issues. Along the way, you will sharpen your skills of reasoning and argumentation, and deepen your perspective on the world.

The Ethics Center at Oklahoma State University, sponsored and operated by the Philosophy Department, is committed to promoting personal, professional, community, and civic life. Here you will have the opportunity to organize and promote workshops, symposia, conferences, and other forums where those interested, including professional ethicists, faculty, fellow students, and the general public, can study and discuss relevant topics. In addition, you will have the opportunity to take part in research relating to applied and professional ethics.

Courses to expect for this major include Philosophies of Dreams, Philosophy of Films, Patterns in Science, and Philosophy of Religion.

Career Options

A philosophical education cultivates key skills that are valuable for individual development and good citizenship, and they are useful in virtually any profession: the ability to think carefully, analyze and critically assess arguments, and write clearly about complex topics. For this reason, philosophy majors typically outperform most other majors on graduate exams, including the LSAT, GRE, and GMAT. Our graduates enjoy successful careers in a variety of fields.
