About

Courses in the Department of History give you a broad understanding of the evolution of civilizations, peoples, countries, and institutions, and an insight into that evolution's meaning. Through small seminars and lectures, you learn to your full potential and conduct research with faculty mentors. History faculty at OSU can assist your studies in a variety of fields, including American history—especially the history of the West, Native American history, and United States political history—and in African American, Ancient, East Asian, Latin American, Modern European, Medieval, and Middle Eastern history. Our department also has an established Public History program with particular strengths in historic preservation, museum studies, and a growing focus on digital history. The Edmon Low Library, located on the OSU-Stillwater campus, has holdings of more than 3.9 million volumes and documents, over 1.3 million electronic books, and over 40,000 journals and periodicals in electronic format in over 300 databases.

A history degree allows you to focus on areas of interest and offers flexibility that makes it possible to complete a second major or a minor, often without additional total hours. Courses to expect for this major include History of the Present, Germany Since 1815, Modern Europe Since 1914, and Ancient Greece.
