Ethics for Speech-Language Pathologists

Description

Ethics education is now a requirement for speech-language pathologists (SLPs). This course is designed to summarize these requirements as they currently exist, review the history of healthcare ethics, and guide examination of the ASHA Code of Ethics and similar documents. Learners will use knowledge checkpoints and reflections to support growing confidence in their ability to navigate ethical challenges.

This course includes:

  • Compare and contrast ASHA and state licensure requirements for ethics education
  • Review the historical roots of current ethics practices
  • Practice navigating the ASHA Code of Ethics
  • A post test
  • Access ethics resources for SLPS

Learning Objectives

At the end of this module, students should be able to:
  • Review the historical underpinnings of ethics education for the field of speech-language pathology
  • Develop working knowledge of the ASHA Code of Ethics and related documents and resources
  • Discuss key principles which support ethical practice
  • Compare and contrast sources which mandate ethical practice of SLP
  • Consider several resources SLPs can use when faced with ethical concerns

About the Instructor

Karen Copeland has a variety of work experience as an SLP, including public school, acute care hospital, inpatient rehabilitation, outpatient rehabilitation and home health settings. She currently works as an SLP and Team Lead in the Rehab Services Department at St. John Medical Center in Tulsa, OK, where her primary clinical focus is caring for adults with neurogenic communication and swallowing disorders. She also has adjunct teaching responsibilities at Oklahoma State University-Tulsa. For the past 8 years, she has organized Cowboy Aphasia Camp at OSU-Tulsa, which pairs people with aphasia and graduate student clinicians for a week of mutual learning.

Karen is a Past-President of the OK Speech-Language Hearing Association, and a past Chair of the Oklahoma Board of Examiners for SLP/Aud. She is the 2018-2020 ASHA Advisory Council member from Oklahoma, the current Chair of the OSHA Standards and Ethics Committee, a member of ASHA SIG 2, and a member of the ANCDS Communications Committee and Certification Committee. Karen completed the ANCDS Board Certification process in 2016.
