The College of Artsand Sciences has selected sociology major and Stillwater native, Rachel Angevine as its ‘Orange Gown Graduate’ for the fall 2014 commencement ceremony on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014.
The ‘Orange Grown Graduate’ leads the processional for Artsand Sciences students and is the first Artsand Sciences graduate to walk across the stage. The ‘Orange Gown Graduate’ is chosen from a pool of students recommended by faculty and advisers.
“It’s an honor and I’m excited,” Angevine said. “Especially since it wasn’t an application or an interview. It was exciting because someone recommended my name for it.”
Angevine will be graduating with a Bachelor of Science in sociology with a minor in religious studies. She plans to become a pediatric oncologist and is currently in the interview process with several medical schools throughout the country.
While sociology may not be the first field that comes to mind for a pre-medical degree, Angevine thinks it gives her a unique angle when it comes to her career goals. The critical thinking skills sociology develops are a prime example of a strength she will bring to the field of medicine.
Originally Angevine had aspirations of being a youth director and if OSU had a religious studies degree, she would have pursued that degree.
“I chose my minor before I chose my major,” Angevine said. “But I really love sociology because of the way it makes you think. I’ve known since I was about six that I wanted to be a doctor, so it wasn’t so much of what I want to do, but how I want to get there.”
Pediatric oncology seemed to fit naturally with her desire to work with children, and she hopes to bring a different perspective to medical school that will help other medical students approach medicine in a more well-rounded way. She looks forward to working as a team with other students.
In addition to her academic achievements, Angevine also stays busy as an officer of the Delta Delta Delta sorority at OSU. She has been the leader of a local Girl Scouts troop since she was a senior in high school and has done volunteer work through a group at her church. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking and taking photos of her excursions.
