Thirty-one students from eight different states have been selected to participate in the Oklahoma State University Life Science Freshman Research Scholars (LSFRS) program for 2016-17.
The OSU freshmen are spending the first part of their school year participating in an eight-week course, with a research guide who will help them identify a faculty mentor, select a research project and write a research proposal. During the second semester, the students will conduct research under the mentor’s guidance and present their work in the form of a poster by the end of the school year. Students fulfilling the program requirements will receive a $1,000 scholarship.
The LSFRS program is made possible by a grant to OSU from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute through the Science Education Program. Funding from the grant allows life science departments to design and create new ways of integrating authentic research experiences for undergraduates. The program is overseen by faculty from the departments of biochemistry and molecular biology, botany, chemistry, microbiology and molecular genetics, and zoology.
