One of the world’s leading philosophers arguing for the existence of God will speak at OSU as part of the Converse-Yates-Cate Lectureship in the Humanities.
Dr. Richard Swinburne, Nolloth Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at Oxford University, will present a lecture titled “Arguments for the Existence of God” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, in the Student Union Theater. He will also speak at a luncheon, entitled “Humans have two Parts – Body and Soul” at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27 in the Murray Hall Parlor.
Swinburne, an influential voice in the world of British philosophy for more than 50 years, is best known for his trilogy of books, The Coherence of Theism, The Existence of God, and Faith and Reason. Swinburne lectures on philosophical arguments in favor of the existence of God the divine, and for the existence of evil in the religious context. Swinburne’s most recent publication, Mind, Brain, and Free Will, argues that humans are composed of both body and soul, and possess free will.
A graduate of Oxford, Swinburne was a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Keele before returning to Oxford as a member of the faculty. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1992, and has published more than 18 major books and numerous academic articles.
