Event planning class helps local philanthropy meet fundraising goals

Big Brothers Big Sisters’ nationally branded fundraising campaign, Bowl for Kids’ Sake, raised more than $36,500 for the Stillwater community.

Stephanie Fry, Area Director for the Stillwater office of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma, was pleased with the outcome of this event and attributes part of this year’s success to the first Collegiate Bowl night, which was planned and promoted by Oklahoma State University students in the School of Media & Strategic Communications event planning class.

“We are so grateful to have met our 2015 goal for Bowl for Kids Sake with over $36,500 raised in this year's campaign” Fry said. “Big thanks to Travis and Heather Ford and OSU Basketball for their support, as well as the Pom Squad. It was a magical night.”

Collegiate Bowl Night took place on the evening of April 22. The OSU Basketball team, Pom Squad, fraternities and sororities joined together to raise over $3,500.  Dave Hunziker, the voice of the Cowboys, came out to support the event as the emcee. The men of Pi Kappa Alpha put forth special effort by sponsoring the Bowl for Kids’ Sake Collegiate Bowl.

“Having the involvement and support of the School of Media and Strategic Communications and the men of Pi Kappa Alpha really made a difference this year in helping us meet our goals,” Fry said. “OSU students are already involved in our mentoring program; it's wonderful to have their fundraising support for our mission, as well. “

Another Collegiate Bowl night will be held this time next year. Big Brothers Big Sisters is looking forward to promoting the event to OSU students for the chance to raise even more money for the children who need mentoring in Stillwater. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma is a donor-supported volunteer organization that provides children facing adversity with a caring adult mentor and friend who, through a professionally supported relationship, stand in the gap to change their lives. In 2014, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma served 1,400 children. Independent research shows that the positive relationships between youth in the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and their Big Brothers and Big Sisters have a direct, measurable and lasting impact on children’s lives. The program is proven to improve children’s odds for succeeding in school, behaving nonviolently, avoiding drugs and alcohol and breaking negative cycles.
