Community course encourages participants to 'Just Write!'

A new community program will help participants develop their ability to write fiction, poetry and nonfiction. Students will also read works in different genres to learn the skills for successful writing.

Just Write! is a non-credit, community program offered through a partnership between Oklahoma State University’s College of Arts and Sciences and the Stillwater Public Library.

“This class is designed to spark your literary ambitions,” said the instructor, Shanley Wells-Rau. “It’s designed to meet the specific writing goals of each student.”

Students will become familiar with the writing workshop format, offer productive criticism to classmates and learn about editing and revision strategies to better understand the notion of creative writing.

Class is from 5:30-7 p.m. every Tuesday from September 10 through October 29 at the Stillwater Public Library. Early registration is $89.

Wells-Rau is an English composition instructor who earned an OSU master of fine arts in 2018. Her poetry has been published in The Maine Review, Bluestem Magazine, Poetry Quarterly and many more.

“In this class, students can follow along with weekly reading assignments and writing prompts while having the freedom to take artistic liberties to individualize the course,” Wells-Rau said. "We will work as a group to inspire and challenge each other with the common drive to ‘Just Write!’”
