The Oklahoma State University Department of Art, Graphic Design and Art History is hosting the fifth annual summer program aimed at junior high and high school students.

The Summer Art Academy is a non-credit commuter program of summer classes for students aged 12-18. Classes are taught by OSU-affiliated instructors in three- to five-day blocks. Students can learn new skills and build their portfolios. The academy offers a wide range of classes: watercolor, jewelry making, drawing, pottery and art history.

“Students explore the visual arts, access collegiate-level instructors and equipment at an unprecedented level,” said Christine Nichols, the program coordinator.

The art history course is free. The other classes require a registration fee, which covers most materials. Deadline to register for each class is two weeks before the start date. Late registration may result in an additional $25 fee.

• Intro to Screen Printing taught by Jen Johnson, May 29 – June 1, 2 – 5 p.m., $75
• Jewelry Making taught by Chris Ramsay, June 3 – June 7, 1 – 5 p.m., $225
• Introduction to Watercolor Painting taught by Teresa Holder, June 10 – 13, 1 – 5 p.m., $100
• Introduction to Pottery taught by Liz Dueck, June 18 – 27, 1 – 5 p.m., $125
• Introduction to Drawing with taught by a Benjamin Murphy, June 24 – 28, 1 – 5 p.m., $100
• Renaissance and Baroque Art taught by Rebecca Brienen, July 1- 3, 3 – 5 p.m., free

“Sometimes, students don’t have room in their high school or junior high schedules to pursue an interest in the arts,” Nichols said. “Attending the Summer Art Academy allows them to continue to develop a passion for the arts and helps them develop artistic skill sets.”
