About

"Pre-Med" is a career goal, not a major. There is no “right” or “best” major to prepare you to be a competitive applicant to a health profession. With that said, medical programs do require you to complete a set of prerequisite courses during college as part of your admission process to medical school. Some of our majors offer a Pre-Med option that includes the pre-requisite courses as part of the degree program. Other majors don’t offer such options.

If you want to attend medical school and chose a major that does not have a Pre-Med option, the Pre-Medical Sciences Certificate fulfills your pre-requisites. The certificate is declared alongside a major, and it includes the math, sciences, and humanities courses that are required by medical schools for admissions. It also includes the courses you need to prepare for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT).

If you plan to apply to medical schools other than The University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine you will need to check the specific admission requirements of those schools. Consult with your academic and premedical advisors for more information.

Already have a bachelor’s degree but need more medical school preparation? If you already have a bachelor’s degree from OSU or another accredited college or university, but still need to complete your prerequisite courses for medical school admission, the Pre-Medical Sciences Certificate is designed for you. We will accept the courses you have already completed, and help you schedule the courses you still need to complete the certificate and prepare for medical school applications. At least 15 hours of the certificate must be completed at OSU.
