We had a wonderful turnout. Congratula- tions to Dr. McIlroy for receiving an award for “Outstanding Lead- ership” from the Physics Faculty, Staff and Students. Dr. Perk Retiring —cont. We showed the stats to the UCC staff and it was found out that both supercomputers ran with the wrong software installed, causing them to run at much lower clock speed and in single- core mode! Much has improved since. Helen and I first wrote the Gopher pages for the Depart- ment and, when the Mosaic browser came, we designed the first html departmental webpage at OSU. While I was on the Arts and Science Faculty Council, the Re- gents wanted to institute a policy that all faculty would have to clock in and out each work day. Theology Professor Bob Cate and I were made the Workload Sub- committee and we reworked a Physics Department document. We wrote that the work of Pro- fessors is creative and cannot be bound by a strict time schedule, as inspiration cannot be forced in a strict time frame, so that we really have a 24/7 job, and that our success can be measured by our output. The policy document that we created then is still the current workload policy for faculty at OSU.
