23 Doug has applied to the Master of Geology program at OSU. He anticipates the achievement of his degree in the spring of 2018, at which time he will enter the petroleum industry with great enthusiasm. Doug’s driving motivation is the future of his children. He wants to be prepared to help them with their college educations so that they can begin their adult lives free of debt. Doug is a member of the AAPG chapter at OSU. He has been named on the president’s honor roll as well as the Dean’s honor roll on multiple occasions. Since his return to college in 2012, Doug has completed 37 classes and earned 35 A’s and 2 B’s. He received the OSU Regents Distinguished Transfer Scholarship, the David Murphy Scholarship and the Skinner Scholarship in 2014-2015. He received the OSU Distinguished Transfer Scholarship and the Oklahoma Energy Resource Board Scholarship in 2012-2016. Doug is grateful for the support of the staff of the Boone Pickens School of Geology as well as that of his instructors. He is particularly thankful for the kindness of his advisor, Sheri Orr, who has been his guide to success. SPOTLIGHT ON STUDENT ORGANIZATION Society of Exploration Geophysicists Student Chapter at Oklahoma State University Faculty Advisor: Dr. Priyank Jaiswal The 2015 academic year started with a change in leadership for the Society of Exploration Geophysicist (SEG) student chapter at OSU. The leadership was handed down to Sundeep Sharma by Tadesse Alemu. Alongside Sundeep were his officers: Luelseged Emishaw (Vice President), Emmanuel Njinju (Treasurer) and Evin Fetkovich (Secretary). Following the elections and under the supervision of Dr. Priyank Jaiswal, the SEG student chapter organized a Petrel fundamentals training course that was taught by a Schlumberger professional. A total of 18 students (9 in Fall 2015 and 9 in Spring 2016) attended the course and learned seismic data visualization and interpretation tips and tricks for this industry favorite seismic software. Spring 2016 also showcased the 3rd annual Geophysics Tech Fest hosted by Geophysical Society of OSU on 19th of February. The Tech Fest hosted students from the University of Oklahoma (OU), University of Arkansas (UArk) and Kansas State University (KSU). A total of 20 student posters were in display around the event hall in ConocoPhillips OSU Alumni Center. The posters a covered variety of different aspects of geophysics such as algorithm development for converted wave, attribute analysis of seismic profiles, potential field studies for rift architecture, near surface seismic imaging and numerical modeling. The Geophysics Tech Fest was possible due to the generous funding from The Geophysical Society of Tulsa, The Geophysical Society of Oklahoma City, ConocoPhillips and Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG). Ms. Saundra Calderon of Schlumberger offering Petrel training to students The event was opened by Dr. Larry Mullins, Associate Dean for Research in the College of Arts and Sciences, who encouraged students to think broadly in terms of future job prospects and to have a variety of skillsets to be successful. Kim Guyer from the Geophysical Society of Tulsa then took the stage and inspired the students to keep working hard through the tough times of oil and gas industry and to have a positive future outlook. The winners of the best poster awards included: Khemraj Shukla of OSU for first place poster titled “Preserving amplitude in C-wave data using local similarity”; Luelseged Emishaw from OSU for second place poster titled “Evolution of the Broadly Rifted Zone in Southern Ethiopia through Gravitational Collapse of Dynamic Topography”; and Fangyu Li from OU for third place poster titled “Seismic Sedimentary Facies Analysis based on Variational Mode Decomposition”. Sundeep Sharma, M.Sc. student at OSU, was the honorable mention. A short workshop followed the poster presentations, where Sharma Dronamraju of AKD professional solutions Inc. (Texas) took the stage and spoke to the participants about “Brownfields: The resources you already have!” This workshop included a fun and informative hands-on exercise that bolstered concepts pertaining to potential assessment on mature field.
