Thirty-three students from the Air Force and Army ROTC programs participated in the annual Bataan Memorial Death March over spring break by ruck marching 26.2 miles through rural New Mexico. Political Science junior Kylie Hammack was selected as a 2024 Harry S. Truman Scholarship finalist. The Truman Scholarship is the premier graduate scholarship for aspiring public service leaders in the United States. Hammack was one of 191 finalists selected from 709 applications and one of four finalists selected from Oklahoma. Department of Physics’ Dr. Eric Benton and Ph.D. student Tristen Lee had their radiation detector, SpaceTED, installed on the International Space Station in November 2023. The detector is funded by NASA through an Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) award. Former CAS interim dean Dr. Keith Garbutt formed an air band named “Mid Life Crisis” featuring deans Pedersen, VanDilender, Frohock and Veenstra to promote the Department of Theatre’s first show of the 202324 school year, “Airness.” The band performed for passersby on library lawn. The music industry program — which is part of the Michael and Anne Greenwood School of Music — was recognized by Billboard Magazine in October 2023 as a top music business program. OSU was listed alongside 41 other accredited schools, including Abbey Road Institute, California Institute of the Arts and New York University. The Department of English hosted 12 Japanese teachers for a threeweek program last summer funded by a $69,999 grant from the U.S. Department of State – U.S. Embassy Tokyo.
