The Department of Psychology’s speech communication faculty hosted the second annual Speech Night competition April 2. This was an opportunity for students to hone their public speaking and earn prizes. This year’s judges were Anne Greenwood, First Cowboy Darren Shrum, Edmon Low Library’s Simon Ringsmuth and the Stillwater Medical Foundation’s Joe Akin. Department of Integrative Biology professor Dr. Michael Reichert has been awarded a CAREER grant from the National Science Foundation totaling more than $1.5 million for research on animal behavior. Dr. Ryan Armstrong, a visiting professor in the Department of Philosophy and instructor in the Religious Studies Program, completed his book “The Book of Job in Wonderland: Making (Non)sense of Job’s Mediators.” The piece engages the theme of mediation in the biblical Book of Job with a unique approach that examines the Hebrew language, the history of its interpretation and a comparative literary analysis of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” The Oklahoma State University Wind Ensemble released a commercial recording this summer under the direction of Dr. Bradley Genevro. Featured guest artists included Alan Baer, principal tubist of the New York Philharmonic, and Dr. Ryan Robinson, OSU associate professor of tuba. ASL lecturer Logan Evans was elected president of the Oklahoma Association for the Deaf (OAD), a nonprofit organization that promotes the interests of the Deaf community in Oklahoma. He also serves as faculty advisor for the ASL Club, which organizes coffee hours and silent dinners for members of the Deaf community and OSU students. Dr. Tyrrell Conway, a professor in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics is leading transdisciplinary research initiatives through the Oklahoma Center for Microbiome Research, which was established with a $10.7 million NIH COBRE award. Jessica Teckemeyer, associate professor of sculpture in the Department of Art, Graphic Design and Art History, commissioned a 200% bronze enlargement of her sculpture “Fox or Foe” using a Humanities-, Arts- and Design-Based Disciplines Research Grant. In April, students from the Department of Physics traveled to Zurich to represent the United States at the International Physicists’ Tournament. The team placed sixth in the world.
