A pioneer in computer science, he developed a way to make projections in hours that would typically take months of hand labor to produce. He was born July 16, 1929, in Enid, Okla. After completing his bachelor’s at OSU, he spent three years working at Los Alamos National Laboratory while he earned a master’s in mathematics from the University of New Mexico in 1955. In 1956 he moved to La Jolla, Calif., where he developed software for General Atomics, which then employed only about 24 workers. In 1960, he earned a doctorate in operations research from the Case Institute for Technology in Cleveland and was one of only 15 people in the United States to hold a doctorate in the field. He worked on software that helped military aircraft distinguish between friendly and enemy planes. In 1963, Dr. Sprague worked with Walter Munk at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography to develop software that would forecast unusual wave patterns, an application to help Navy landing craft during war. Dr. Sprague worked on artificial-intelligence programs for Systems, Science and Software in the late 1960s and early 1970s before he started Policy Development Corp. to work with the publishing industry. He revolutionized the magazine publishing industry by creating software programs that allowed publishers to forecast circulation based on thousands of variables. His work assisted publishers in long-range planning, budgeting and growth projections. Magazines such as U.S. News & World Report, Texas Monthly, Architectural Digest and New York later used the software program he developed in 1972 for Psychology Today. By the 1980s, 150 publications were using the program. He retired in 2000.
